sometimes when working on large excel files which include hidden panes, tabs etc the window will become greyed out,
only option is to restart application.
should try the following - both seem to help:
1. "View" -> "Arrange All" -> check "Windows of active workbook"
2. Options -> Advanced -> Display -> uncheck "Disable hardware graphics acceleration"
